Quiz Answers and Explanations
1. Answer a: Spam is a meat product. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is responsible for regulating meat (and poultry) products.

Caviar, and all seafood and seafood products, whether imported or domestically produced, are regulated under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) as a food. So, too, are the other choices.

2. Answer c: Insect repellents are regulated as pesticides by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Both aspirin and shampoos that get rid of lice are drugs; eye shadow and lipstick are cosmetics; all are regulated by FDA.

3. Answer c: Oven cleaners are regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Canned tomatoes and spaghetti are regulated as foods by FDA. Tolerances for pesticide residues in foods are established by EPA, but FDA is responsible for ensuring that these tolerances are not exceeded on foods (except for meat, poultry and certain egg products, which are under USDA’s jurisdiction). A tolerance level is the maximum amount of a pesticide residue permitted in or on a food. FDA enforces a ban on the sale and distribution of turtles less than 4 inches long, the size most often sold as pets. Pet turtles frequently carry Salmonella bacteria, which may cause severe diarrhea in children and adults. Baby turtles were sold as pets in the United States until 1975, when the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention determined that the bacterial contamination could not be prevented by any known treatment.

4. Answer d: Smoke detectors–both photoelectric and ionization chamber types–are regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The radioactive source used in the ionization chamber detector is naturally occurring, not electronic and, therefore, is not a substance that would be regulated by FDA. (The level of radiation exposure to home occupants from ionization chamber detectors is much less than that received from the low level of natural background radiation.)

Under the FD&C Act, FDA is responsible for protecting consumers from unnecessary exposure to radiation emitted from electronic products. (These provisions were originally separate from the FD&C Act and were referred to as the Radiation Control for Health and Safety Act. They were later incorporated into the FD&C Act when the Safe Medical Devices Act of 1990 was enacted). Airport security x-ray machines and microwave ovens must be properly shielded so that the radiation generated by these products (x-radiation and microwave radiation, respectively) does not harm anyone. MRI diagnostic equipment is regulated as a medical device under the FD&C Act. It is also subject to enforcement as an electronic product emitting radiation because it uses radio waves and a strong magnetic field to produce its images. Laser products used in lumber mills must conform to an FDA standard that ensures their safety. This standard applies to all laser products, whether medical, industrial or consumer.

5. Answer c: The only advertisements over which FDA has direct jurisdiction are those for prescription drugs. FTC oversees advertising for other FDA-regulated products.

TV sets are regulated under the radiological health provisions of the FD&C Act. All televisions must comply with a performance standard that ensures their safety. This standard also applies to video display terminals used with computers. Over-the-counter and prescription drugs, as well as human biological products (such as vaccines and blood products), are regulated by FDA.

6. Answer a: Baby pacifiers are regulated by CPSC unless they are marketed with health claims, in which case they are under FDA’s jurisdiction.

Food-contact articles, including baby bottle nipples, ceramic ware intended for food use, and coffee mugs, are regulated by FDA. So are eye charts, which, as diagnostic products, are considered to be medical devices.

7. Answer a: Illegal use of heroin is the responsibility of the Drug Enforcement Administration, the key federal agency that polices illicit, or “street,” drugs. (If heroin were being studied for medical uses, FDA would regulate it as an investigational drug.)

Barbiturates are subject to abuse and thus may, potentially, wind up on the “street,” bringing them under DEA’s purview. However, barbiturates have legitimate medical uses, and FDA is responsible for ensuring they are properly manufactured and labeled. FDA regulates methadone as a drug, and methadone maintenance treatment programs are monitored under regulations promulgated by both FDA and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Medicinal oxygen is regulated by FDA as a drug. Animal drugs, including veterinary tetracycline, are regulated by FDA.

8. Answer e: Hair dryers are regulated by CPSC.

Kidney dialysis machines and tongue depressors, as different as they are in complexity, are both considered to be medical devices. FDA regulates non-fluoridated toothpastes as cosmetics, and fluoridated toothpastes as drugs.

9. Answer a: Labels on beer and other malt beverages, distilled spirits (liquors), and wines are regulated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms under the Federal Alcohol Administration Act.

Ground coffee, coffee beans, rabbit meat, and canned tuna are all regulated by FDA as foods. (The Federal Meat Inspection Act, which gives USDA authority over meat products, covers cattle, sheep, swine, goats, and horses. Other meat products, including game meats such as rabbit, are regulated by FDA.)

10. Answer a: Home canning equipment, under a memorandum of understanding between FDA and CPSC, is regulated by CPSC.

FDA’s jurisdiction includes the facilities where the products it regulates are stored, such as food and drug warehouses. Hearing aid dispensing establishments are bound by specific FDA regulations that impose conditions for the sale of hearing aids. The regulations attempt to prevent misrepresentation and ensure adherence to proper medical standards. Regarding exporting drugs, FDA continues to have authority over its regulated products even when they are exported.

11. Answer c: The FD&C Act specifically excludes soap from its definition of cosmetics. CPSC regulates this product.

All of the other choices are defined as cosmetics and, therefore, are regulated by FDA.

12. Answer a: A vaccine for horses is a veterinary biological product. FDA does not have jurisdiction over veterinary biologics. The Virus, Serum, and Toxin Act gives this responsibility to USDA.

The FD&C Act gives FDA authority over pet foods and drugs, which would include veterinary penicillin, medicated feeds, and bird feed. The Public Health Service Act confers on FDA the authority to regulate the interstate movement of psittacine birds (parrots, cockatoos, macaws, parakeets, and other birds in the psittacine family). These birds are potential carriers of psittacosis, a disease that can be transmitted to people. Psittacosis, which is also known as parrot fever, can range in severity from a mild respiratory infection to a protracted illness.

13. Answer a: The safety of public drinking water (tap water) is protected by EPA, as decided in an agreement between that agency and FDA.

FDA has jurisdiction over bottled water, which is considered a food under the FD&C Act. The remaining choices are also defined as foods.

14. Answer b: Child-proof packaging authority, addressed under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act, was delegated to CPSC.

Tamper-resistant packaging, which is required for certain OTC drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices, is FDA’s responsibility. Food packaging materials, such as plastic containers and candy boxes, are subject to regulation as food additives under the FD&C Act because of the possibility that they may leach their chemical constituents into the food product. These potential additives are referred to as indirect food additives. A container bearing a drug product is considered to be a component of that drug, and FDA, therefore, requires that it be appropriate for that drug.

15. Answer a: The animal counterpart of a cosmetic is commonly referred to as a “grooming aid.” Cosmetics, as defined in the FD&C Act, apply only to human use. Therefore, products intended for cleansing or promoting attractiveness of animals are not subject to FDA control.

An artificial limb for dogs is regulated as a veterinary medical device. While such products do not require FDA approval, they do come under the purview of the FD&C Act. They may not bear labeling that is false or misleading, nor may they be otherwise misbranded or adulterated. The laser scanner must comply with the standard. Mercury vapor lamps, most often used to light streets, gymnasiums, sports arenas, banks, and stores, must be maintained properly to be safe. With some types of mercury vapor lamps, if the outer envelope is broken and the lamp continues to operate, intense, harmful ultraviolet radiation is emitted. An FDA standard ensures that this lighting is safe. Finally, FDA regulates vitamin C tablets as food supplements.

What are the benefits of using a collagen elastin lotion? There may be no benefits and it could be bad for your skin, as well as your long term health. It all depends on whats really in that bottle. Here are some tips for the average consumer.

Have you used the product before? If you are trying any kind of cosmetic for the first time, the US Food and Drug Administration recommends that you test it on an inconspicuous area, before continuing to use the product.

Lotions, creams, shampoos, body wash and other personal care products are considered cosmetics. They are not meant to provide any health benefit. They might make you look better, temporarily. They might moisturize. They could do what the company claims, but not necessarily.

The regulations may change at some point in the future, because it has been learned that many of the chemicals in personal care products penetrate the skin, enter the bloodstream, lodge in the tissues and contribute to health problems. But, currently, they are still being sold under the assumption that they are non-threatening to your long-term health.

It was always known that a collagen elastin lotion or any similar product could cause short term health problems. Cosmetic companies are allowed to use allergens, irritants and toxins in their products.

25% of people surveyed by the FDA have experienced redness, rashes or other adverse reactions at some point in the past. Usually, they are short-lived, but there have been instances of serious allergic reactions to relatively common substances, among people that never knew they had an allergy. So, if you havent used it, test it.

There are some new creams that are truly safe and hypoallergenic, but there just a little harder to find. A collagen elastin lotion is one of the products that often cause prolonged redness. Consumers have reported several weeks going by, without much change in the severity of the reaction.

Even when a person sees a cosmetic surgeon for injectable collagen, the doctor will test the patient for allergic reaction, ahead of time. If a reaction presents, he will choose a different type of material for the injection. Hyaluronic acid or even the patients own fat is sometimes used.

You also need to look at the other ingredients in the bottle. Estradiol, placenta and/or amniotic fluid are sometimes including in a collagen elastin lotion. These actually make your face puffy, so it looks better, temporarily, but the hormones in these products can stimulate cancer cell growth. Thats just one example of how a cosmetic can affect your long-term health.

The ingredients to look for on the label include grape seed oil, coenzyme Q10, vitamin E and SYNERGY TK, a proprietary name for a peptide complex that stimulates the production of new skin cells. If you really want to get rid of fine lines, reduce wrinkles and have firmer, younger looking skin, you need more cells. A collagen elastin lotion is not accompanied by that benefit. In my opinion, its a waste of money.

You might be surprised at the ingredients found in your everyday concealer. I was certainly blown away and disappointed because I used concealer every day for years before making the switch to natural mineral powder. I felt betrayed that Ive spent thousands of dollars that have gone to companies that care nothing about the health and wellness of their consumers. Ive only chosen four chemicals randomly from the list of ingredients found in concealer. Check it out.

1. Colorants
2. Parabens
3. Urea (Imidazolidinyl) and Diazolidinyl Urea
4. Propylene Glycol

Colorants are obviously used to change the products natural color to the desired color. Of course colorants are not naturally derived from berries or fruits but are made from a variety of chemicals. Artificial colorants are cheaper, brighter and more uniform and have a longer shelf life. One example of a group of makeup colorants approved by the FDA is aluminum colorants. It is difficult to imagine that any use of aluminum colorants can be deemed safe.
These colorants contribute to infertility, cancer in reproductive organs, cognitive delays, birth defects and organ toxicity in the stomach or respiratory system. This is one example of a colorant and there are many others like it, not to mention the ones used that do not require approval from the FDA.

Parabens are chemicals used as preservatives. They are estrogenic, have been linked to breast cancer and can disrupt the endocrine system. Deodorant contains parabens and studies have found a link between parabens and breast cancer.

Urea (Imidazolidinyl) and Diazolidinyl Urea are preservatives. Remember when you were young and you had to dissect a frog in your biology class? Can you recall that lovely smell when they placed the frog on your desk? That was formaldehyde, the chemical used to preserve bodies. Urea produces formaldehyde.

Urea may cause heart palpitations as the result of respiratory irritation. It can also cause the following: depression, insomnia, headache, joint pain, chest pain, chronic fatigue, immune system depression and possibly cancer (According to the Mayo Clinic).

The use of propylene glycol (solvent) just baffles me because it can be found in our makeup as well as in any other cosmetic product we use on our hair, skin and nails. It can also be found in many essentials like deodorant, soap, toothpaste and food. This ingredient makes your makeup slippery just as it does with antifreeze. This nasty chemical is toxic but is still considered safe in small doses according to the FDA. Perhaps the small doses just kill us more slowly and make the source of any resulting complication less apparent.

Your skin absorbs propylene glycol quickly and easily. This chemical solvent causes kidney and liver damage, gastro-intestinal complications and brain abnormalities. The EPA requires workers handing the material to wear protective goggles and keep their skin covered with rubber gloves but they are allowed to wear it on their face when they put on their makeup in the morning. Your average deodorant contains an unusually high amount of this chemical.

To everyone like me who cannot leave the house without makeup, lets make a change for the better and seek out natural alternatives! Companies who sell these products will be forced to change their ingredients to stay in business and we will be happier and healthier once weve made the right choice! You may think that you alone cannot make a difference, but just like everything else, it has to start somewhere!

Rogaine Treatment for Men & Women: The Differences

Rogaine 2% is for women, and Rogaine 5% is for men, but there’s more …

Rogaine originally received FDA approval for Men’s Rogaine and Women’s Rogaine with a 2 percent minoxidil solution and Men’s Rogaine Extra Strength Topical Solution and Men’s Rogaine Foam with a stronger 5 percent minoxidil solution for men only. But, many doctors use them for both sexes, so whats the difference?

“Simply stated,” says New York City board-certified dermatologist and hair transplant surgeon Dr. Eric Schweiger, “thats just how Rogaine currently has the FDA approvals, and it would be very costly and time consuming for them to go through the clinical trials to approve the 5 percent minoxidil solution for women. I use both for women in my practice, depending upon the specific hair loss, sensitivity and scalp situation,” he states.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicines National Center for Biotechnology Information, the generic active ingredient minoxidil was approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for use topically in Rogaine for mens hair regrowth in 1988, and later, in 1992, the same 2 percent minoxidil formula was approved for women. This identical Rogaine 2 percent minoxidil formula for both men and women was approved in 1996 for over-the-counter sale. The stronger (5 percent minoxidil solution) Men’s Rogaine Extra Strength Topical Solution was introduced, tested and FDA-approved for men only in 1997, and in 2006 Men’s Rogaine Foam was introduced.

According to Schweiger, another difference in the formulas aside from concentration of the minoxidil hair regrowth ingredient is that the 5 percent solution contains propylene glycol for better skin penetration, which makes the medication more effective, whereas the 2 percent solution is alcohol based. Although both the alcohol- and propylene glycol-based preparations can irritate the scalp, propylene glycol can cause actual allergic reactions in those who are sensitive, which is where evaluating a patients skin and scalp carefully becomes important.

Rogaine testing for women

A 2002 clinical trial conducted on men only at the Duke Dermatopharmacology Study Center in Durham, North Carolina, compared the 5 percent minoxidil to results using the 2 percent minoxidil solution. The study showed that men experienced 45 percent more hair regrowth with the stronger solution. Additionally, users of the stronger solution experienced results sooner than did users of the 2 percent one. And although those study results were published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, according to Dr. Schweiger, preliminary trials on women had not shown any increased effectiveness with the stronger 5 percent minoxidil solution, so the product was never further developed for women.

But a 2004 study by the Cincinnati, Ohio-based Dermatology Research Associates tested 381 women to find out whether the 5 percent minoxidil solution would be more effective in the treatment of female pattern hair loss than the 2 percent minoxidil solution. The study results also were published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, and it was determined that the 5 percent topical minoxidil groups hair regrowth results were superior to those in the 2 percent topical minoxidil group. It should be mentioned that both studies were “funded by Pfizer Inc., original maker of Rogaine products.

Is Men’s Rogaine Extra Strength Topical Solution too strong for women?

The 2004 study also found an increased occurrence of local irritation and the observation of facial hair growth with 5 percent topical minoxidil that were not experienced in the 2 percent topical minoxidil or the placebo. Schweiger agrees that the stronger concentration can irritate womens more delicate skin tissues, and therefore he evaluates each patient accordingly. “A small percentage of female patients experience facial hair growth as a side effect of using either Rogaine, which is more common when using the 5 percent solution, but this side effect subsides once the medication is discontinued.”

Effective Rogaine usage for both men and women

Dr. Schweiger says, “The most important consideration is that the active hair regrowth ingredient minoxidil, no matter what the concentration, must reach the scalp twice per day in order to be effective. For some women, the foam formula will not be as effective as the liquid formula because it gets caught in the hair and does not reach the scalp.” In addition, the stronger 5 percent minoxidil propylene glycol formula is greasier than the 2 percent minoxidil alcohol-based formulation. Because of this, he states, “For patients who complain of the greasiness, we advise minoxidil 5 percent at bedtime and 2 percent in the morning.”

All that you need to Know about Permanent make-up

Tired of plucking your eyebrows and having to touch up on your make up several times a day? answer is learning about the option of permanent make up that Amazing Faces offers. Wondering how you could apply a makeup that never wears off? Here is how you do it.
Permanent make up is otherwise popularly known as cosmetic tattoo or tattooing of the face. An indelible ink is used to make an insertion in the skins dermis layer to alter the pigment for beautifying and other reasons. Sometimes tattoo is applied to the area around the eyebrow to enhance its beauty and give a fuller appearance. It is also possible to apply tattoo in the eye lids as a way to mimic eyeliners. Lips could also be completely filled or just lined with color through tattoos. Just like the results of getting a permanent tattoo done in your body, this method as well offers permanent results. Cosmetic tattoos or facial tattoos are less intense especially when applied in the eyebrow regions. The colors applied are chosen according to the users hair color and skin tone. In the case of eyeliner tattoos, they are almost always applied with a black base and have a permanent hold.

Other names for this procedure include derma pigmentation, Micropigmentatiom. Permanent cosmetics and cosmetic tattooing, the latter considered the most fitting as permanent make up involves nothing but tattooing. To make sure these procedures do not have any harmful effects on the users, in the United States pigments used in the indelible ink and the ink itself are subjected to FDA regulations or regulations of other similar agencies that approve color additives and cosmetics. While the advantages of permanent make up are many, there is only one major disadvantage to be dealt with. When the permanent make up is applied by inexperienced professionals, the result might not be as good as your expectations and might have harrowing effects on your skin. In order to deal with this problem, there is only one solution. You need to be extremely careful about choosing your cosmetic tattooist. Amazing Faces is equipped with qualified, experienced and friendly staff with indomitable skills in cosmetic tattooing. Whether there is a need for an eyelash extension or scar camouflaging, Amazing Faces has got it covered. So if you live in Chicago and need a permanent make up done, you know what the best option available is. So, do not delay, take your first step towards attaining permanent beauty.

Can you sell homemade cosmetics to the general public and retail
outlets? This is one of the most common questions asked of me during my
25-plus years of making cosmetics. The answer, in almost all countries,
is: Yes. There certainly seems to be a lot of confusion regarding this
issue – fueled in part, I am sure, by the desire of the global
conglomerates to keep control of this multi-billion dollar industry.

Many
countries take their lead from the US FDA, so let’s take a look at what
the FDA has to say about the issue of making homemade cosmetics for
retail sale. Homemade cosmetics are not required to be tested by the FDA
– or any other authorities, for that matter. However, there are a few
rules which must be observed.

1. The cosmetic product must be
correctly labelled, and follow the labeling regulations. Essentially,
this means stating the ingredients in descending order of use, the
quantity of product contained within the packaging and any known safety
precautions.

2. The cosmetic product must not contain any
prohibited ingredients. If you are using professional formulations for
making cosmetics, this will not represent any problem.

3. The
cosmetic product must be free of pathogens. Again, if you are using
professional formulations, you will not have any difficulties complying
with this regulation.

The benefits of making cosmetics which have
been professionally formulated, is that you will be able to produce top
quality products of a calibre equal to, or even better than, the leading
cosmetic manufacturers. How can your homemade cosmetics be better than
the leading brands?

While it’s true that top quality cosmetic
products usually include high grade, effective ingredients, cosmetic
manufacturing companies operate on extremely high profit levels – 1000%
or even much higher. Because the most effective ingredients are also the
most expensive, in order to maximize their profits, leading cosmetic
making companies usually use these substances in the lowest proportion
possible.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="height: 60px"><ins id="aswift_4_expand" style="border:none;height:60px;margin:0;padding:0;width:309px;background-color:transparent"><ins id="aswift_4_anchor" style="border:none;height:60px;margin:0;padding:0;width:309px;background-color:transparent"></ins></ins></ins>

Making your own homemade cosmetics allows you to use
the same ingredients – but in much higher proportion. This means you can
produce products of much higher quality and effectiveness. If you have
your own business making cosmetics, you can make color cosmetics, skin
and hair care, body and bath products, and toiletries, which will
quickly develop a loyal clientele. And you will be able to make the same
profits as the big cosmetic manufacturing companies.

You can even
start a business making cosmetics for other retailers – hair and beauty
salons, spas, etc – and package the products especially for them, with
their own label. Private label manufacturing is becoming increasingly
popular.

Making homemade cosmetics for retail sale is a high
profit and easy business to operate, and there are many ways to sell the
products and develop markets. Because the big conglomerates concentrate
on the large, mainstream retailers, there are literally thousands of
smaller, untapped, hungry markets – a few contracts to supply these
outlets can easily bring you a six-figure income.

To summarize,
the FDA does not review or approve cosmetic products or cosmetic
ingredients before they are sold to the public. The agency acts only
against cosmetic products found to cause harm after they have been
released on the market.

If you are using untested recipes from
your kitchen, this could present a problem if a customer suffered an
allergy. Also, cosmetic products without preservatives can easily grow
bacteria and molds, and cause skin reactions

In the US, you do not
need approval from the FDA to start a business making cosmetics. In
most other countries, this is also the case. If you are interested to
join the high profit and prestigious world of making cosmetics, my best
advice is to purchase top quality formulations and make them in
accordance with the manufacturing directions. This way you can be sure
they will be in compliance with FDA regulations.

You might disagree, but hear me out on this. I have read numerous face cream reviews and have even written a few, myself. It is important to share information with fellow consumers. It’s obvious that we can’t rely on manufacturers to provide honest information. Sure, some manufacturers do come clean with the facts. But, most just hide behind glossy advertisements and celebrity endorsements.

A new internet database, created by the Environmental Working Group, a public safety watchdog, of sorts, provides consumers with a little extra help. The database lists the ingredients in thousands of different skincare products and the EWG ranks those ingredients in terms of safety.

They also allow consumers to upload face cream reviews or make comments about the products. Some consumers are unhappy with the EWG evaluation, but the base their evaluations solely on the facts.

Cosmetic companies commonly use known allergens, irritants and toxins in their products. The reason behind this is money. There is no other explanation. As hard as the EPA and the FDA fights to get better regulations for skincare products manufactured in the US, the more lobbyists cosmetic companies send to Washington.

The hope of the EWG is simply to inform the consumer, so that they can make their own choices. It took years of hard work to get this information to the public and I, for one, am appreciative of all of the work that they have done.

If you read enough face cream reviews, you will see that some people “love” a product, while others “hate” it. That’s not really surprising when you have a little more information.

According to surveys conducted by the Food and Drug Administration, 25% of all cosmetic users have had an adverse reaction to one of the skincare products that they have used. So, if you read 10 face cream reviews for the same product, two or three are likely to be negative.

It is a known fact that sensitivity to some allergens develops over time. So, an ingredient that may have been non-irritating in a person’s youth can cause a reaction, as they get older.

It is also known that there are lower levels of hyaluronic acid in older skin. Hyaluronic acid is one of the things that prevent toxins and irritants from penetrating deeply. The deeper it penetrates, the more likely it is to cause irritation. That is probably the reason that you see some many negative comments about wrinkle creams and anti-aging face cream reviews.

Cosmetic companies never seem to consider how a harsh compound could affect an older person. They spend a lot of time figuring out their ad campaigns and marketing techniques. But, they spend very little time on researching or developing truly effective products.

Put this to the test right away! There is a new entry into the skincare product category. It is a company that makes some of the best anti-aging supplements on the market. You won’t read many face cream reviews for their products, unless you find their website. They allow their customers to leave comments on their blog. So far, there hasn’t been a single negative one.
